Sustantivos contables
Son cosas que se pueden contar una a una: one apple, two apples; a chair, three chairs.
- En singular necesitan un determinante: a/an, the, my, this… No se dice I have car, sino I have a car.
- Líquidos y materiales: water, milk, coffee, rice, sugar, flour, bread, meat
- Conceptos abstractos: information, advice, knowledge, love, time (tiempo), money
- Nombres colectivos: furniture, luggage, equipment, homework, news
Los incontables no tienen plural y no llevan a/an. El verbo va en singular: The news is good.
Errores típicos de hispanohablantes
| Incorrecto | Correcto | Por qué confunde |
|---|---|---|
| an information | some information / a piece of information | “una información” |
| many advices | a lot of advice / some advice | “muchos consejos” |
| furnitures | furniture / pieces of furniture | “los muebles” |
| luggages | luggage / two bags | “las maletas” |
| homeworks | homework / two assignments | “los deberes” |
| the news are | the news is | “las noticias son” |
| a toast | some toast / a slice of toast | “una tostada” |
Se dice People are friendly here, no People is.
- coffee: Coffee is expensive here (el café en general) / Two coffees, please (dos tazas).
- time: I don’t have time (tiempo) / I’ve been there three times (veces).
- paper: a sheet of paper (papel) / a paper (un periódico o un artículo académico).
- chicken: I like chicken (carne de pollo) / There are five chickens in the yard (gallinas).
Palabras de cantidad
| Uso | Contables (plural) | Incontables |
|---|---|---|
| mucho/s (preguntas y negativas) | many | much |
| mucho/s (afirmativas) | a lot of / lots of | a lot of / lots of |
| algunos, un poco | a few | a little |
| pocos, poco (sentido negativo) | few | little |
| ¿cuántos? / ¿cuánto? | How many…? | How much…? |
| algo de, algunos (afirmativas) | some | some |
| (negativas y preguntas) | any | any |
Ejemplos:

- I have a few friends in London. (algunos, suficientes) – I have few friends there. (casi ninguno)
- There is a little milk left. (queda un poco) – There is little hope. (casi no hay esperanza)
En frases afirmativas, much suena muy formal. Lo natural es I drink a lot of coffee, no I drink much coffee.
- a cup of tea, two cups of coffee
- a glass of water, a bottle of milk
- a slice of bread, a loaf of bread
- a bowl of rice, a bag of flour
- a piece of advice / information / furniture
- a bar of chocolate / soap
- a kilo of meat, a can of soda
